CLUB NEWS FOR APRIL
The ground is thawing and field trips are shaping up. Stay tuned. Confirmed for now is a trip to Gordie's farm on June 26. We will meet as usual for our club meeting at 6:30 and leave together from the Resource Center in Florence.
Kelley Laughlin will present wire wrapping at the May 22 meeting. I anyone has jewelery pliers, please bring them along and also a stone that you would like Kelley to wrap for you.
The April mineral of the month was Tourmaline. If you want a copy of the handouts, please ask at any meeting.
A new members' list has been printed. If you have a change of address or e-mail, please let us know. If you want a copy it can be e-mailed to you.

NORTHWOODS GEOLOGY CLUB MINUTES FOR APRI, 2013

The meeting was brought to order by Carl Fitzpatrick at 6:30 pm .
The new T shirts with the club logo were delivered to those who had ordered them.
Chris, our tour leader, led us upstairs for the tour of the gift shop and the mineral display case.
Penny Rickey read the minutes for March. A motion was made to accept the minutes as read. It was seconded and all approved.
Lois Ann Johnson gave the treasurer’s report. The March donations were $43.00. This, along with the $24.00 from February made a total of $67.00 deposit for March bringing the bank balance to $782.84. A check was issued to Sue Fitzpatrick in the amount of $149.40 to pay for the web site. This covers the dues from February 2012 to February 2013. The current balance is $633.44. A motion was made to accept the treasurer’s report. It was seconded and approved.
A change in the program schedule was announced. Joe Tatar’s rock tumbling presentation will be in August. Kelley Laughlin will present wire wrapping at the May 22 meeting. If anyone has small jewelry pliers please bring them. Also bring a stone that you would like to have wrapped by Kelley.
Marsha is tentatively scheduled for a presentation on gold mining in October. Shawn Carlson would then do the rock identification night in September.
Carl said he has contacted Aquila Resources who operate a gold mine in Stevenson. They agreed to do a program at one of our meetings. July was suggested and Carl will call them to confirm that date if possible.
Sue Fitzpatrick said that members should feel free to post on the web site or e-mail her and she will post it for you.
Sue has made up the release forms for field trips. She has also made up new business cards. Let her know if you want her to print cards for you.
Carl presented an idea of picking a monthly mineral, getting information about it on the mindat.org site then printing the information for hand outs. The chosen mineral for April is Tourmaline. Several pages of data were passed out.. If anyone wants copies of these handouts, let Carl know.
Carl also intends to write directions from Iron Mountain to all of the mines and field trip areas we go to and collate them for handouts. These sheets will include latitude, longitude, a list of the minerals that can be found, and the location of the mine.
Sue Fitzpatrick requested reimbursement for the cost of printing and other expenses she incurred with the T shirts and club business which she estimated at about $50.00. Lois Ann suggested that she make out a receipt for her exact expenses and let her know. Lois then made a motion to reimburse Sue for her expenses. The motion was seconded and approved.
Lois Ann reported that two light bulbs had burned out in the display case. She and Frank purchased two new lights for the case plus two extra. She requested reimbursement for the cost of $16.90. She let the Resource Center know that she and Frank will take responsibility for maintenance of the case and replacement of bulbs. A motion was made to reimburse Lois for the $16.90. It was seconded and approved.
Lois Ann suggested buying a ream of paper for Carl and Sue’s printing duties.
Sue reported that Dan Fitzpatrick went through all the sign up sheets for the last four years and made up a new member list. Sue will keep it updated. If anyone wants a copy, contact Sue.
Sue and family will leave for Grand Marais the evening of Friday, May 10 for two weekends. They will be at the Woodland Park . Everyone is welcome.
Dan suggested inviting a group of boy or girl scouts to join us on a field trip which would promote learning for the children and also introduce youth to our club. A discussion of this idea involved child safety issues, sending e-mail invitations to scout troops, and club rules for their and our protection such as signing a waiver sheet.
Lois Ann reported that the visitor center had 18,864 visitors sign their guest book last year and that our mineral case gets a lot of looks. Lois said that we need to figure out what to do with the top two empty shelves. She suggested contacting the Seaman Museum to see if they want to use the top shelf for mineral specimens they have stored in boxes. These would be labeled for the Museum which would promote them. Lois Ann will call them and report back to the club. Sue suggested that we could also use empty space for photographs of club members and activities.

Minutes for March 27, 2013

Program: Tour of the Resource Center and our mineral case. The gift shop will be open.
The meeting was brought to order by Carl Fitzpatrick. Lois Ann Johnson reported that tonight’s program originally scheduled as a tour of the Resource Center was cancelled at the last minute and has been rescheduled for the April 24 meeting.
The March minutes were read by Penny Rickey. A motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes as read. Approved.
The treasurer’s report was given by Lois Ann Johnson. The bank account was $715.84. The February donations of $24.00 brings the current balance to $739.84 as of February 28.
Sue Fitzpatrick passed around a picture of the logo that will be on the tee shirts. The shirts will be orange with black lettering. The cost is $8.00. A sign up sheet was passed for those who want to order shirts. Lois Ann made a motion to sell the shirts for $10.00 each and to order extra, five large and five extra large. Motion was seconded by Sue Fitzpatrick. Approved. Sue collected the money from those who ordered shirts and she will place the order this week.

Lois Ann will ask Laurie if they want to sell our tee shirts in the gift shop as suggested by Barry Perron.
Sue will re-do the business cards and work on a one page brochure. Lois Ann will ask Laurie from the Resource Center if there are any funds available for our brochures. She will also contact the woman who made brochures for the local historical society to see if she will create one. One page, folded in thirds.
As for release forms, Sue will work on them with Lois Ann.
Larry Zip handed out brochures from the Delaware Mine tour.
Sue mentioned the McCauflin mountain near Wabeno , WI as a field trip.
Dan, Sue, and her parents will be going agate hunting the evening of May 10 through the 18th. They stay in the city park in Grand Marais. Everyone is welcome to join them.
Lois Ann and Cathy Cowell will be camping again this summer in the Keweenaw for agate hunting. They will announce the date at the May meeting. Everyone is welcome to join them.
Cathy suggested a field trip the Caledonia Mine. Carl has contacted them and was told to call back in May for dates and prices.
Door prizes were handed out.
Lois Ann passed around two walking sticks beautifully crafted and designed by Gerald Fitzpatrick.

Northwoods Geology ClubFEBRUARY NEWS
Eight people attended the February 27 meeting. Three officers were absent. President, Carl Fitzpatrick, vice president, Sue Fitzpatrick, and Lois Ann Johnson, treasurer. Dan Fitzpatrick filled in for Carl. We had a great time, though, with much conversation and plans.
Larry Zipp gave an impromptu program about the Carp Lake Mine near Lake of the Clouds.
Penny, Rich, Dianne, and Marlin shared their favorite rocks and told about them.
Dan brought us up to date on programs and trips the committee has decided on.

APRIL 24: Wire wrapping with Kelley Laughlin.
MAY 22: Rock tumbling/polishing with Joe Tatar.

Northwood Geology Club
Minutes of meeting, April 25, 2012

Meeting brought to order by past president, Lois Ann Johnson at 6:40 pm.
Lois Ann gave the treasurer’s report. The bank account shows $526.54 which includes last month’s donations. There were no expenditures last month. Motion was made by Carl Fitzpatrick to accept the treasurer’s report as read. It was seconded and approved.
Barry Perron read the minutes since the secretary was late. A motion was made by Carl Fitzpatrick to accept the minutes as read. It was seconded and approved.
Carol reported on an informal field trip to Rock Dam. Eight people showed up. She posted information on Facebook.
Suggestions for the May 23 meeting were discussed. Ideas included a trip to Felch quarry and show and tell. Joe Tatar suggested having a rock exchange which everyone approved.
Penny Rickey reported that the Ishpeming Rock and Mineral Club will have their field trip to the Republic Mine on Saturday, May 12. You can drive directly to the mine or meet other members in Ishpeming at 9 AM (THEIR TIME) (8 AM our time) at the Shopko (old Pamida) parking lot. A fee of $5.00 per person will be collected.
Penny Rickey suggested that members look at their rock collections to see if they have anything they could donate for our rock exchanges and to bring them in to a meeting. That way we could store specimens and perhaps have more rock exchanges.
Ann Kiszonis said that we could bag the rocks and put in slips of identification papers. Those donating any rocks or mineral specimens should include what it is and where it was found if at all possible.
Lois Ann told Penny to buy some plastic snack bags for that purpose.
Lois Ann Johnson approved the payment of $6.00 from the donations to Penny Rickey for juice purchased.
A motion was made to adjourn the meeting, seconded and all approved.
Names were called for door prizes donated by Loin Ann Johnson.
Lois Ann then presented the program about her field trip to New Mexico. She had dozens of gorgeous specimens including agates, blue “luna rocks” and many others. Her talk was lively and very entertaining.

Northwoods Geology Club Meeting Minutes October 24, 2012

The meeting was brought to order by Lois Ann Johnson.
The September minutes were read and accepted.
Treasurer’s report: $17.00 September donations. Bank balance is $618.44.
Lois Ann reported that Carl Fitzpatrick has agreed to be club president in 2013. She is talking to Kelley Luughlin regarding the vice predidency. Lois Ann will be on the committee for programs and field trips. Lori Patterson will fill in as needed.
On December 5, we will have a short business meeting before the Christmas party. Members may bring a snack dish to pass. If you bring a door prize gift, please wrap it. Kingsley North will provide a door prize as they have done each year.
Al Smolinski reported that there will be a draw down on the Paint River near Crystal Falls in July of 2013. It will take fifteen days to draw the water down 20 feet. It will be refilled no later than November.
Lois Ann said that she and Carl plan to meet either at her home or at the Resource Center to discuss field trips, programs and ideas. If anyone has any suggestions, please call Lois Ann or Carl Fitzpatrick. She suggested that a program for January 23rd might be an artifact night. We could bring any tools or arrowheads, etc. that we have.
Laurie Moore told Lois Ann that in February or March we could take a tour of the Resource Center as a program before our business meeting.
The meeting was adjourned. Everyone enjoyed bringing their unknown minerals to be identified by Shawn Carlson. Shawn, a well-known mineralogist usually presents a program on rock identification each October. He began the evening by explaining the difference between a mineral and a rock.
Mineral: A precise, naturally occurring, inorganic, homogenous, crystalline solid with definite chemical and physical properties. Then he gave several examples and compared the substance to the above criteria. How about a snowflake?
Rock: A mixture of minerals that have been associated time and time again over geological history.

Treasurer’s report: August donations of $21.25 were deposited. $601.08 in savings.
Old Business:
Lois Ann Johnson contacted the Florence Mining News to straighten out their not running the meeting notices submitted by Penny.
She also tried contacting Shawn Carlson regarding rock identification night for the October meeting. He didn’t answer. She will try again to contact him.
Carl Fitzpatrick reported that he has been working on field trips.
Lois Ann and Tom Oravec brought some brochures from the Mineral Museum of Michigan in Houghton and suggested an idea of going there on a field trip during the winter. Lois Ann called for a show of hands of those interested; a majority answered yes so she will contact them for details.
Suggestions for field trips were voiced.
Jeff Kiszonas found out that the Michigan Iron Mine will allow people to go in and pick.
Kennecot is booked for this year. Tours will start again in May-June. They do not allow picking due to liability but we could go just to look around. We need to let them know.
Al Smolinski suggested a trip to the Caledonia Mine and that we should collect the money up front, non-refundable and rain or shine. We should start now to see who is interested in order to prepare for next year.
Jeff Kiszonas suggested Cliff Mine for next year.
Marlin Rickey suggested Black River Pegmatite.
Anne Kiszonas suggested another program from Nick and Jeannie Nichols about their telescopes.
Al Smolinski suggested the Paint River Flowage.
Marlin Rickey suggested a slate quarry about 20 miles north on Hwy 16.
Other suggested sites were Lake of the Clouds, Rock Dam, Traders Mine and Commonwealth Mine.
New Business:
Lois Ann Johnson said that due to trouble with field trips and programs a committee should be selected which should be started now and then posted on the web site. Carl Fitzpatrick called for volunteers. Lois Ann Johnson, Carl Fitzpatrick and Sue Fitzpatrick volunteered.
Al Smolinski said that since a waiver form is not available someone should put a copy of the waiver on the web site so people can print it as needed to present to mine owners.
Penny Rickey volunteered to post the minutes on the web site since she has time for this and would ease the burden for others. Lois Ann Johnson and Carl Fitzpatrick said it was a good idea.
Due to darkness, Carl Fitzpatrick’s program of looking for gold in sand purchased from Home Depot was postponed.
Marlin Rickey called for a field trip in October. It was decided to go to the Commonwealth Mine and possible on to a collection site behind former Bob’s Mobile Homes in Iron Mountain. The date was set for October 13 to meet at 9 am at the upper level of the Florence Resources Center.
There will be no meeting in November. The December meeting will be the 5th, the first Wednesday and will be the Christmas party and election of officers for 2013.

Meeting minutes for June 27, 2012

Meeting brought to order by president Martin Cole at 6:30 pm.
The May minutes were read by Penny Rickey. A motion was made by Lois Ann Johnson to delete a sentence about a rock and mineral show in Calumet in the Keweenaw. It was seconded and stricken from the minutes. They were then approved.
Lois Ann gave the treasurer’s report. Credits for May were $5.60 from the rock exchange and $3.00 in donations for a total of $8.60 which was deposited in the bank. There were no debits. End of month balance is $548.49.
Carl Fitzpatrick reported that the Copper Country Rock and Mineral Club will sponsor a field trip to the Medora Mine and area gravel pit on August 8. The charge is $45.00
A discussion was held about the pending field trip to Norway at the Cyclops Mine. It was decided that the date be Saturday, July 14. We will meet at the Citgo station in Norway at 10 am. No time change is involved. Martin said that the permission he received was for week days only. He will contact the owner again and try to get permission for a Saturday trip. Lois Ann initiated a sign up sheet for members present who are interested in the trip including phone numbers. Those who signed up will be notified when the date has been confirmed. Kelley Laughlin said that minerals found at the Cyclops site include quartz, hematite, pyrite, agate, scepter crystals and possibly dolomite although dolomite is rare.
Kelley also discussed contacting Doc Hayes for quartz stromatolite and Mark Bablony for calcite crystals at the Vulcan Mine and the Pine Creek road cut for druzy amethyst and quartzite which is a very good mineral for tumbling.
Al Smolinski asked about a repeat trip to the Felch quarry. Lois Ann said that she needs to call the contact person again to get permission for a larger group. This trip will again be discussed at the July meeting.
The subject of having business cards at the Ishpeming show was raised. Kelley rents a table and volunteered to have small flyers available with our club information. He will print the flyers and refused an offer for $20.00 to pay for his table. Thank you, Kelley.
Lori Patterson has updated and reorganized the web site. She gave the password information to Carl Fitzpatrick and he will forward same to Martin Cole. Carl continues to keep our club’s information updated on Facebook.
Al reported that the Ishpeming Club will have a field trip July 21 and that they want to know the dates for our field trips so they have the opportunity to attend. Carl said he has spoken with them and told them our trips will be posted on the web site and Facebook. Al also set out some tickets for the Ishpeming Show for people to fill out. He covered the cost for those who signed them and will send them in.
A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.
Door prizes were handed out. Kelley Laughlin donated several fine mineral specimens and Penny Rickey donated three polished stones.
Kelley Laughlin’s program on wire wrapping stones was very interesting and informative. He has been in the jewelry business for about 30 years and is also a silversmith. He said he had once been given a crash course in wire wrapping and that is what he passed on to the group. Among the items he demonstrated were a chevron amethyst, a marble, and an irregular, uncut, unpolished rock.

Minutes for July 25,2012

Carl Fitzpatrick brought the meeting to order at 6:30 pm.
Penny read the June minutes. A motion was made to approve. Seconded.
Lois Ann gave the treasurer’s report. Credits were $.34 in interest and $21.00 in donations for an ending balance of $569.83.
Old Business:
Lois Ann explained that Carl Fitzpatrick will be filling in as acting president for the rest of the year because of President Martin Cole’s upcoming surgery. Martin will be asked to continue with work on field trips and the web site. A note of appreciation will be sent to Martin for his valuable contribution as president. Lois Ann Johnson made the motion to accept Carl as acting president and Joe Tatar seconded. All approved.
Lois reminded that there will not be a meeting in November and the December meeting will be the 5th, first Wednesday, for the Christmas party and election of officers. She will approach Kelley Laughlin to see if he is willing to be president. She asked that if anyone has anyone else in mind to feel free to nominate them.
Al Smolinski asked to discuss another field trip to the Felch quarry. Lois has approached the owner about bringing in another group as well as ours. He needs to consider that and it will likely be a fall trip. She would like to know how many people might be going on the trip because of the liability and because they own the pit but they lease it to a construction company which has up the no trespassing signs. She has a letter stating that she may go in but if there are two clubs with a lot of people she wants to know for sure there is no liability problem and put us in jeopardy of not being able to go in the site anymore. Lois also stated that if anyone wants to go to Felch, she is most likely able to take anyone there any time. Just give her a call. A tentative date of September 22 was set for a Felch trip and it will be discussed again at the August meeting.
Tom suggested that $5.00 be charged for a field trip. If the person shows up for the trip the money will be refunded and if a no show, the money will be put in the treasury. This was suggested because there have been several field trips where many people sign up to go but only a handful actually attend.
Ishpeming’s field trip to the Republic Mine is August 3. Their trip to Lindberg’s quarry is Aug 5. Their show is Aug 3-5.
New Budiness:
Lois Ann reported that we have use of our meeting room for free plus use of the kitchen, etc. She asked for discussion about asking Lauri from the Resource Center if there is something they need, say, $50.00 value that we could purchase for them. To make a donation from our club for using the room. Carl agreed that it would be a good gesture and to ensure that we can continue to use the room, To answer a question about the case upstairs, Lois Ann said that it belongs to both the club and the Resource Center. We donated $500.00, they matched the $500.00, Lois Ann and Kingsley North kicked in, Frank donated some of the wood. The mineral specimens in the case all belong to the club or club members. There is one shelf unused in the case. Lois Ann asked Lauri if she would be interested in a display of Lake Superior agates and Lauri said she would be tickled because she gets questions frequently about them. Lois Ann and Lori Patterson are willing to put some of their collection in the case. If anyone else has any Lk Superior agates to lend or donate with their name next to the rock, they will be getting together next Monday or Tuesday to put the display together. Lois Ann also said that she will get together with the book store manager to add the new book out about Lake Superior agates which would include both states of Wisconsin and Michigan. We can display this book in the case with the agates so that we help each other out.
Marlin Rickey said he picked up a brochure at the Lakeland Show about Adventure Mine underground mine tours.
Al reported that there were no release forms available at the Cyclops Mine and no way to connect to a computer to receive them. He suggested that copies be made up and that either the president or whoever is leading the field trip have a file of them and also that individuals could take a release form for their own use.
Al also reported that Kingsley North is not included in our Links page on the web site and that because of all they have done for us we should have them on the Links list. He also suggested Kelley Laughlin’s site, and the new rock shop in Alpha. Other potential links mentioned were Linda Hawley’s camp ground and Nick and Jeannie Nichols. Carl said that he would see that these links be added to our site.
Al suggested that we have more business cards made up and put a tray of them in the Alpha rock store and other areas and that members have some to post where they see fit. Marlin agreed that we have business cards printed. Linda Hawley said she is happy to take our cards to put up at her business. Linda also suggested VistaPrint as a web site to get the first 250 cards printed free. Carl said that he would like to advertise our meetings on Telephone Time. We will need to decide what information to include on new business cards, e.g. the web site address. Carl suggested that the physical address be the address of the Resource Center. Al suggested that maybe underneath the Northwoods Geology Club there be a saying or slogan which is more fun or appealing to the general public. Something like, “If you can’t walk to the mailbox without picking up a rock, this is the place for you.” Lois suggested, Welcome rock hounds. Something to appeal to all those people who are interested in pretty rocks. Carl said that at the August meeting everyone should bring in a slogan they think would be good and we can vote on the winner.
Joe Tatar volunteered to do the August program on rock tumbling.
The September meeting will be Dan from Kingsley North. Lois Ann will contact him to make sure.
The October meeting will be rock identification.
A motion was made to adjourn the meeting and seconded.

Old Business:
Penny Rickey reported that the comments page on the web site has a lot of junk that needs to be edited out.
Wayne Maki suggested that a special heading be created for field trips instead of being under the blog heading and that the current year’s field trips be listed and also a section about past field trips. He also suggested that there could be a members’ list on the website. Only members who give their permission would be listed with name/phone/email address. This list could be used for any member who needs help or rides.
Lois Ann pointed out that each member has the entire member list with names, phone numbers and addresses.
Carl Fitzpatrick announced that information on Face Book is being kept up to date and anyone can contact him for information or questions.
Penny suggested that although FB is a great venue, we are paying for the web site.
Martin expressed concern that it is time to get the web site organized.
Al Smolenski suggested that Penny could include the web site address in the meeting announcements to the newspapers.
Martin said that he is willing to help administer the web site with Lori Patterson’s permission. Carl also volunteered to help Lori. He and Martin will talk with her. Lois Ann suggested that two people should administer the web site. Carl suggested three people.
Marlin Rickey reported on the May 12 field trip to Republic Mine with the Ishpeming Club. He said that half the people on the trip were from the Northwoods Club. Marlin brought several specimens to show from that trip.
Lois Ann pointed out that we had previously scheduled the Kimberlite Pipe trip on June 9 which is the same date as Ishpeming’s trip to Champion Mine. Shawn Carlson reported on the numerous minerals available at Champion. Martin called for a show of hands. The majority chose the Champion Mine trip for June 9.

Shawn talked about the rock and mineral show at Calumet in the Keweenaw hosted by the Copper Country Rock and Mineral Club.
Carl Fitzpatrick brought several nice mineral specimens to store for future rock exchanges.
Penny asked for members’ thoughts about asking permission from the Ishpeming Club to have a table at their August show to hand out flyers and/or cards for our club. Shawn stated that all we need to do is pay for a table. This suggestion will be discussed further in June. Carl Fitzpatrick stated that he had recently spent seven hours at a meeting promoting our club. Thank you, Carl.
Penny suggested that we get our club listed on the Midwest Federation site.
Lois Ann contacted Kelley Laughlin and he agreed to present the June 27 program which will be interactive wire wrapping with stones.
Lois Ann made a motion to close the meeting. Seconded and approved.
Martin Cole kindly provided many door prizes he purchased at Kimberly North and Marlin Rickey also donated two prizes.
The rock exchange was held.
(ISHPEMING) Saturday, June 9 – Champion Mine in Champion MI. Northwoods Geology members will meet at the BP station in Sagola at 7:30 am Central time and continue on as a group to Ishpeming.
OR you may go to the Ace Hardware/Shopko parking lot in Ishpeming to meet up with the Ishpeming Club. Be there at 9 am their time (8 am our time). They leave promptly at 9:30 to drive to the mine. You must sign a release form and the cost is $5.00. Please familiarize yourself with the IRMC field trip rules.
